(More customer reviews)The stock radio on my older convertible gave out which gave me an opportunity to install something useful.I had 4 must haves in my search.1- I had to have hands free Bluetooth calling built in. 2- I had to have USB for MP3 playback.3- It had to have a 3.5mm audio in jack to connect my cell phone for MP3 access.4- Had to be under a 100$.My search led me to this Dual unit and based on the above made the purchase.
I happened across it when Amazon had it listed at 69$ and at the time was wavering over the price but since then it has been at the 117$ price makes me feel better. But even at the higher price it is still worth buying, here's why:
1-Built in hands free Bluetooth calling with external microphone (uses standard adapter mic can be upgraded but not necessary)
2-Bluetooth A2DP stereo streaming ( a bonus) for any Bluetooth MP3 device (my cell phone)
3-USB port accepts any drive up to 64GB (tested) for MP3/other format music playback (USB also charges IPOD)
4-Included IPOD cable (USB/3.5mm plug on one end/IPOD connector on other end) Controls IPOD functions on head unit.
5-3.5mm audio in for any standard connection to MP3 players/cell phones
6-Full CD format playback.Prerecorded CD's and computer generated CD's
7-Standard FM radio. (HD radio is nice and Dual makes this model with an HD receiver) but unless you live in a major city forget about getting any kind of signal
8-Removable faceplate should you feel the security need
How does it work and sound:
1-Hands free calling is good.Placement of the external microphone is important.I placed mine high on the A pillar.Music is paused/muted when placing/receiving calls and resumed when completed.
2-A2DP is perfect.Sound quality has been exceptional and absolutely no stutter, disconnects or skipping. As soon as I hit the play button on my cell phone within 3 seconds it's playing through the Dual.
3-USB port has accepted my 64GB stick and plays everything on it.The Dual only has a single line display so sorting especially if you have thousands of songs can be tedious. My recommendation if you plan on using the USB port often is to buy several smaller capacity (2GB sticks) and load your different music types per memory stick and plug and play that way.
4-3.5mm audio in jack. Works as expected.Sound quality is not significantly improved over A2DP
5-CD playback is expected too.Nothing exceptional nothing detrimental.Anyone still play CD's?
6-FM radio is okay.I find it doesn't pull in the stations the factory radio did but the factory radio was built primarily around the radio where as the Dual is more of a multi media device and the FM radio is secondary.
7-I am not an Apple user so I have not tested the IPOD abilities.
A couple notes:
1-Although the Dual can be used to directly place calls, it really is not meant too.It does have dedicated control buttons to answer/hang-up and you can use the included remote control to dial calls with the number pad, but I don't recommend it.I have a large touch screen phone (HTC Android Incredible) and use my phone for everything from NAV to music. It has its own cradle right on my dash so I do everything from the phone interface connected via hands free Bluetooth and A2DP to the Dual.
2-The included remote is a joke.Very small pop buttons and unlighted. The best place for this is in the glove box
3-The Dual only accepts a sync connection to one Bluetooth device at a time.If you intend to sync several devices, like multiple cell phones you would have to un-sync and re-sync each one.
4-This Dual does not have a multi card reader. If you use SD/Sony Pro duo or others you would want to convert them to USB sticks.
5-Single line display.Very limited info. While I use my cell phone for 90% of the interface with the Dual it would be nice to have the capability to have a little more information displayed on the head unit.I think price determines this feature so I can't complain too hard.
Over all I recommend this Dual.Feature content versus price is worth it.There are better units out there with more features but will take more out of your wallet. For me this was perfect.
