(More customer reviews)I installed this in my 07 Prius about 15 mos ago (today is 5-19-09).Those of you that own a Prius understand that the fidelity of the sound system (even my "high end" JBL) leaves much to be desired.I had previously added a subwoofer to my sound system.
I love the HD Radio.I live in an urban area and my reception is excellent.I continue to get HD until I am about 35 miles out of the city.The radio uses my existing car antenna by intercepting and by-passing the car's antenna.The reception (for non HD) is equivalent to my car's Toyota (JBL) unit.I do lose an HD signal if I go into a tunnel.This is okay because the unit seamlessly switches back and forth to standard FM.It is known that HD signals are much weaker than standard FM.IF you want to use your car's radio you need to turn the HD radio off in order to let the signal by-pass the HD tuner into your car's unit.
I get some outstanding music on HD radio (FM).Less advertising, better song selection.Overall I'm very satisfied with both the concept and the tuner that I installed.
The only drawback is that the unit's backlighting is starting to fail.So it is difficult to see the screen.However, I use all preset stations and unless I'm trying to find out the name of what is playing it's no big deal.
Finally, a very nice feature is that there can be multiple HD channels on a single HD radio station.So 105.7 FM can have channels HD1 and HD2.Each channel is playing a different HD song.This unit shows you what is playing on your current selected HD channel and on the other.Therefore if you don't like what you got you can switch it by just pressing the same preprogrammed button a second time, switching back and forth on the same radio station.
Drawbacks.Some radio stations broadcast HD radio but do not give you HD output.In other words, the fidelity of the HD radio is not any better than the standard FM signal.This is not the fault of the HD tuner.This is a station issue.You will know when you listen.
I like this unit so much that I'm considering buying one and adding it to my home theater.We'll see.
